Canada is a North American country. Located in the northern part of the continent, it extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean. Geographically, Canada is the world`s second-largest country. It consists of 10 provinces and 3 territories. The major difference between a Canadian province and a territory is that provinces are jurisdictions that receive their power and authority directly from the Constitution Act, 1867, whereas territories derive their mandates and powers from the federal government. Canada is a federal state governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. Being a democratic constitutional monarchy, Canada’s head of State is the Sovereign and the head of Government is an elected Prime Minister. Canada’s federal system of parliamentary government means that the government responsibilities and functions are shared between federal, provincial and territorial governments.
The country is officially bilingual with English and French as its official languages. It has a population of approximately 35 million as of 2013.
Canada is a developed country. Canada’s advanced economy is one of the largest in the world. It has the ninth-highest per capita income globally, and the 11th highest ranking in human development. Subsequently, Canada ranks among the highest in international measurements of education, government transparency, civil liberties, quality of life, and economic freedom. Canada is a recognized middle power and a member of many international institutions, including the G7, G8, G20, NATO, NAFTA, OECD, WTO, Commonwealth of Nations, Francophonie, OAS, APEC, and the United Nations.
