Express Entry System

Express Entry System is a Federal permanent resident application intake system that is being used to manage applications. In order to become a permanent resident of Canada through the economic class, one has to qualify for either the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, or the Canadian Experience Class. Some Canadian provinces and territories also use this system to recruit candidates for their different application streams.

Having an express entry profile is the first step in the system. To create a profile, an applicant will have to provide information about their skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other details. Information provided at this stage is crucial and can either make or break a permanent resident application. Once a profile is created, the applicant is placed into a pool of candidates and the system will assign a score that represents the comprehensive ranking in the system. Those applicants who will rank higher than the required score as per the Ministerial Instruction will be invited to apply to become a permanent resident of Canada.

Federal Skilled Trades

If you are a trade person or one who works in one of the occupations below, you may be able to apply for the permanent resident under the Federal Skilled Trades Program. In order to qualify, you need to have at least two years of work experience in the trade, show French or English proficiency, and either have a qualifying job offer or a certificate of qualification in your trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

Federal Skilled Worker

This program is designed to ensure Canada maintains a highly skilled workforce that contributes to Canada’s economy. If you are a skilled worker, you may apply to become a permanent resident in Canada, without having to come as a worker at first.

Factors that are being considered in this program includes: age, education, knowledge of English and/or French, work experience, previous study or work in Canada, relatives in Canada, spouse’ qualification, and a job offer. However, the absence of one of the factors mentioned above does not necessarily mean that one will not qualify for the program. It is very possible to become a permanent resident without a job offer or even without having a relative in Canada.

Canadian Experience Class

These programs were established to meet the labour market shortage for caregivers in Canada. Once a temporary foreign worker has worked in Canada for at least 24 months, they may possibly apply for permanent resident from within Canada. Jobs included in this program includes home child care provider, registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses, licensed practical nurses, nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates, and home support workers and related occupations..

Alberta Advantage Immigration

The Provincial Government of Alberta can nominate an individual and its family to be eligible to apply for permanent resident to the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada. There are different streams and categories under this program that may help you become a permanent resident of Canada such as:
• Alberta Opportunity Stream which includes skilled workers, semi-skilled workers, and international graduates
• Self-employed farmer stream

Provincial Nominee

Aside from the Federal programs, each of the ten provinces and three territories in Canada has their own provincial nomination programs. They have their own streams and sets of qualifications to which one may qualify for. The province/territory will nominate applicants who they believe have the intention to settle in their province/territory and who can positively contribute to their economy. Having ties to a province/territory, though not required, is definitely helpful in this kind of application. Some assessment criteria may include age, skills, language, education, work experience, financial capacity, business skills, and net worth. Once nominated, the applicant applies for Permanent Resident.

Atlantic Immigration Pilot

This program is intended for skilled immigrants and international student graduates intending to permanently live in New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Labrador, Nova Scotia, or Price Edward Island. Agri-Food Pilot

This program helps address the labour needs of Canadian agri-food sector.

The pilot provides a pathway to permanent residence for experienced, non-seasonal workers in specific industries and occupations. It will run until May 2023.
